The Role of the Board

What does a board member do?

The Board hires the Director, sets overall policy for the Farm, charts the future of the Farm, approves the budget, engages in fundraising, supports the Caretakers, and helps to promote the story and mission of Bethlehem Farm. There are some activities that extend beyond the meeting weekend, but it is not extensive.  Prayer support for the Farm and especially for the Caretakers is a large part of the daily responsibility.  The Board meets at Bethlehem Farm three times a year, in late July/early August, early November, and late April/early May, with a remote meeting in late January/early February. It is a three-year term which is renewable for an additional three years.  The meetings usually last most of a Saturday. Members are expected to make at least two of the meetings each year. As with all nonprofit boards, membership is voluntary and there is no compensation. The rewards, however, can be amazing. You will develop a rapport with the Caretakers and the other Board members that can draw you closer to Jesus and the work that He is calling you to do. There are some frustrations, but many more times of joy and laughter.

Areas of experience that are always helpful to have on the board are: campus/youth ministry, sustainability, building trade skills/green design, public relations, knowledge of our local area, knowledge of the diocese, diversity/equity/inclusion, management/leadership/nonprofit, fundraising, legal issues, financial expertise, information technology, intentional Christian community living, and insurance issues. Most important, however, is a passion for the mission, life and work of Bethlehem Farm.
